Doncaster College Students Perform Latest Show
As I said last week in my review of Bat Out Of Hell my life is slowly returning back to normal and I've started booking trips to the theatre again.Like buses it seems musicals are no different in that you wait ages to see one and then two come along at once. In the same week as going to see Bat Out Of Hell I got a nod that the students at Doncaster College were performing Roxy the musical so I grabbed myself a ticket.

The Doncaster College Performing Arts Students are currently housed in the beautiful setting of the High Melton campus situated 6 miles outside of Doncaster set in 126 acres of land which has Old Hall, where lecturers and administration happens, The Stables where you can have anything from a bar meal to a wedding and the Harvey complex where you find the theatre.
I have be honest and say I had not heard of Roxy the musical and could not find anything on a Google search but presumed correctly when speaking to one of the Lecturers that it was based on the musical Chicago and Roxy Hart.
The set was very basic with the good old fashioned black curtains round the stage with a neon sign saying 'Roxy' hanging from the back wall. So there was nothing that could go wrong, Nothing to distract you leaving you able to spend all your energy watching the performers.
The music was a mix of live and recorded music. Live when the performers were supposed to be in a club performing and recorded when they were just acting and doing the big numbers such as the well known 'All that Jazz' that you always associate with Chicago the musical.
Over all the students were a talented bunch. As always there was a variety of skill levels with both dancing and singing and apart from one bit when one of the girls did a kick the wrong way to everyone else there were no mistakes or people in need of prompts.
It was good comparing notes trying to work out which ones we thought could make it in the world of Showbiz
One of the students Rhys Burns seemed familiar and then at the interval talking to his tutor we were reminded that he performs a lot at another one of our favourite theatres, The Doncaster Little Theatre.
The costumes like the set were the faithfully long black dresses and tights but were in keeping with the story and everyone looked the part.
A good night out for £5 which helps the College coffers and gets the students used to performing in front of people.
If you get the chance I would recommend you finding out what shows the Performing Arts students at your local College or University are putting on because you get a good cheap night out and you maybe seeing the next Michael Ball or Idena Mezel at the start of their careers.
